|Last year's Horticulture and Craft Show in Carstairs attracted a record number of entries - 965 entries (386 juniors and 579 adults)! And they're hoping to top that this year!|
Held on Friday, August 17th, the 73rd Annual Bench Fair features flowers, fruit and vegetables, photography, handicrafts and hobby crafts.
The show is held at the Carstairs Curling Rink. The rink will be open to receive exhibits on Thursday from 7 to 9 pm and on Friday from 8 to 11 am. Then judging takes place.
Doors open to the public Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Admission is by donation.
There are over 90 categories at the Junior level and over 240 at the Adult level, so lots of opportunity for everyone to try their hand at winning a red ribbon.
This Bench Show brings the community together and volunteers do their best to improve the show every year by keeping up with the latest trends in gardening and crafts. So, guess what's new this year?!
Each contestant must grow their own zucchini, then carve it to create a "vehicle". Divisions are 7 years and under; 8 to 10 years old; 11 - 17 years old; and 18 and over. Vehicles must be less than 25 cm in width including wheels and decorations. Vehicle axle must pass through the zucchini (e.g. dowel with spinning wheels is acceptable. A zucchini strapped to a skateboard or toy is not). Decorations are encouraged. There will be a prize for the fan favourite racer. Vehicle must be gravity-powered only. No engine/rubber band/rocket etc. powered vehicles are allowed. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for each division as well as most creatively decorated. Be inventive. Races will begin at 5 pm on Friday.
